Top Home Upgrade #2 - Sheer Draperies

Does the word “draperies” make you cringe? Stay with me for just a minute … because sheer draperies may have a place in your home.

We’ve all seen rooms full of hard-edged metal, stone and tailored furniture – very crisp and contemporary- that look a little impersonal or cold. Or with glaring light pouring in, or unattractive views on the other side of the glass. Or, especially in urban condos, windows that look right into the rooms across the street. Does gaining a little privacy have to be at the expense of daylight?

A beautiful solution for all of these situations can be found in sheer draperies.

Sheer draperies add visual softness and gently filter the light – and the views looking out or looking in. They are very versatile, complementing both traditional and contemporary styles, managing to look romantic and ethereal draped in a bedroom, and elegant and timeless in more public spaces. Sheers work wonderfully lavished across an entire wall, floor to ceiling, to create a continuous but low-key backdrop.

Ripple fold sheers are my favourite window treatment to add casual elegance, sophistication and softness, with contemporary panache. I recently had these custom ripple fold sheers made for a client’s bedroom, in a creamy off-white. They absolutely complete the room, adding a touch of calm glamour.

With innovative hanging systems, many header options from pleats to tab-tops, you can create all kinds of looks to complement and enhance your home with sheer draperies. There is a huge variety of sheer fabrics on the market, Your fabric choices range from classic, smooth white or cream sheers, to woven-in tone-on-tone stripes, fabrics with subtle metallic shimmer, and beguiling beautifully embroidered panels – all in a wide range of colours.

Sheer draperies layer beautifully over shades and blinds, softening the rather flat appearance, or layered inside heavier drapery panels that directly complement your décor.

The only caveat is to please, hang them full length, right to the ceiling and to a scant ½” from the floor.

So if the words “curtains” and “draperies” make you imagine the old heavy (and likely dusty) relics that hung across your high-school stage, you may want to take a closer look at how sheer draperies can help make your home shine.
